Actress Marlee Matlin visits NFHS
Posted by in Marlee on May 15th, 2009|

For Jenna Kramer, it was a dream come true.

The only deaf student in the Niagara Falls School system was sitting in a third-floor classroom at the high school Thursday afternoon, just a few feet away from the woman she says has inspired her dreams.

Standing at the front of the room, her hands tucked into the front pockets of jeans, actress Marlee Matlin had the undivided attention of a group of about 50 NFHS students and a group of teachers and administrators.

Accompanied by her interpreter and producing partner, Jack Jason, Matlin told the students never to fear challenges. Filling in for actor Henry Winkler, Matlin told the students he had been her mentor.

Winkler had seen Matlin in Chicago, in a stage production of “Children of a Lesser God.” The play tells the story of a speech teacher who falls in love with a girl in a school for the deaf and the obstacles they face due to their differences. Read the rest of this entry »

Most celebrity contestants on “Dancing with the Stars” walk away with a fitter, leaner body and a better turn at a tango. But for hopeful hoofer Marlee Matlin, who joined CTV’s hit show in 2008, the dance bootcamp spawned something else: a new autobiography.

In “I’ll Scream Later,” Matlin, 43, chronicles her topsy-turvy life before and after “Children of a Lesser God,” the 1986 film that earned the deaf star a Best Actress Oscar at 21 for her debut performance.

Drug rehab, her rocky, abusive two-year relationship with actor William Hurt. … Matlin leaves nothing out, including her first public account of suffering sexual abuse as a child at the hands of baby sitter and teacher.

Matlin, the youngest actor to ever win an Oscar for Best Actress, says this memoir would never have happened if it weren’t for her six-week-stint on “Dancing with the Stars.”

“Doing ‘Dance’ really seemed to impact viewers. I got so many emails from all over the world telling me how my dancing really inspired them,” Matlin told Canada AM today from Los Angeles.

Their sense of inspiration compelled Matlin to pen her new autobiography. But as Matlin says, “I knew I’d have to tell people more about me than just being a woman who can’t hear music.”

The book’s title also holds double meaning, says Matlin. Read the rest of this entry »

Marlee ‘humbled’ by Hollywood star
Posted by in Marlee on May 7th, 2009|

Marlee Matlin revealed it was humbling to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The deaf American actress - who has starred in movies such as Children Of A Lesser God and TV shows including The L Word - was joined by actors Henry Winkler and Jennifer Beals at the ceremony in front of the Musso & Frank Grill on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.

“I really am humbled to be here today with all of you on this magnificent street of dreams, the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” Marlee said through a sign-language interpreter.

The Oscar-winning actress, who took part in the sixth season of US TV show Dancing With The Stars, thanked Happy Days star Henry for discovering her as a child and letting her live with him and his family for two years while she was breaking into show business.

“To the most amazing mentor and friend, Henry Winkler, and your beautiful wife, Stacey, and family, how would I ever be standing here without your words of encouragement and support and love? Two years of letting me stay in your beautiful home when I first moved to California was a turning point in my life,” said the 43-year-old.
